Winter Seed Mix

Winter brings challenges for many of our horses. Horses that need more calories to maintain their weight or good sources of easily digested protein and extra fiber will find that additional support in this tasty combination of nuts and seeds.

Even sensitive horses can enjoy using this recipe. For IR and Cushing’s horses at Wellness Ranch, we use the smaller serving size of ¼ cup once a day.

Winter Seed Mix

  •  Pumpkin seeds aid in parasite control, provide Vitamin E, and are a source of essential fatty acids (Omegas)
  •  Sunflower seeds – Vitamin E, immune system
  •  Chia seeds – Omegas, protein
  •  Flax seeds – Omegas, pre-biotic (gut health), fiber
  • Add-ins – ½ cup of dried cranberries (fiber, manganese, Vitamin E), ½ cup of dried blueberries (immune, Omega 3, folate), ½ cup of dried peppermint (selenium; manganese, Vitamin A; digestion)

Recipe for small batches of Winter Seed Mix:

¾ cup raw pumpkin seeds (shelled variety)

½ cup raw sunflower seeds

¼ cup chia seeds

1 cup flax seeds

Total: 2 ½ cups which makes 10 servings at ¼ cup each when fed once a day; or 5 servings when fed ¼ cup twice a day.

Larger batch:

3 cups raw pumpkin seeds (shelled variety)

2 cups raw sunflower seeds

1 cup chia seeds

4 cups flax seeds

Makes 40 of the ¼ cup servings, or 20 servings if fed twice a day.
